Why John Berges founded VasoCARE®.
John Berges was nine when he asked his mother why his Godmother Nana always wore pants. She told him Nana was once involved in a car accident and had developed blood clots and subsequent leg ulcers.
Many years later as an adult, John joined Nana for dinner and noticed dressings on her legs below the hemline of her pants. She told him of the accident and the trauma led to blood clots which destroyed her leg vein valves. A filter was implanted to prevent blood clots from traveling to her heart or lungs. For over 40 years the painful condition had affected her social life and intimacy with her husband. Nana showed John her compression stockings and her arthritic fingers that no longer had the strength to apply or remove them. John teared up. His knowledge at that time regarding her condition was zero. John hugged Nana and said goodbye. He resolved to find a way to help her.
John researched Nana’s condition and purchased a compression device from a German manufacturer and showed Nana how to use it to treat and manage her leg ulcers emphasizing how compliance with this treatment would help heal and prevent recurrence.
After 8 months Nana experienced the longest period without recurring leg ulcers and hailed her compression pump as a true blessing. John’s satisfaction in helping Nana played a major role in his becoming involved with pneumatic compression medicine and helping others suffering with venous leg ulcers and peripheral vascular disease.
Things patients say after just one hour of pneumatic compression therapy:
“Wow, I can see and feel a reduction in swelling.”
“I can flex my ankles.”
“I’m actually walking and not dragging my feet.”
“I can walk farther without limb pain.”
“My ulcer has healed.”
John Berges: “It’s so satisfying when patients share their results with us. It’s why we do what we do.
