HYPERKERATOSIS with hyperpigmentation
An overgrowth of the skin, like a very thick callus, where skin easily flakes, warts-like where the skin turns red or darkening of the skin. Over time, the limb with untreated lymphedema gains a brawny and indurated texture and reveals hyperkeratosis and papillomatosis. Cellulitis is a serious complication that develops in patients living of lymphedema.
Skin breakdown with persisting lymphorrhea
Lymphorrhea is when lymph fluid leaks from the surface of the skin, usually manifesting as a trickling of fluid. Insect bites, cuts, wounds, cracks — no matter how small, any break in the skin has the potential to allow lymph to weep through. The pressure of lymph fluid inside the skin tissue is so high that the skin is unable to stretch fast enough to accommodate the fluid which leads to a break in the skin and leaking of lymph fluid.
